Streets of Portlaoise 5k road race will go ahead on St. Patrick's Day

One of the most popular road races in the midlands will go ahead on St. Patrick’s Day despite the cancellation of the parade in Portlaoise.

The Portlaoise Athletics Club Streets of Portlaoise 5km run will kick off on the morning of St. Patrick’s Day and follow a new route.

The race is the first of eight races in the Kia Road Series 2018 which comprises of eight road races all over Ireland run in conjunction with Pop up Races and will see the winning male and female winning a Kia car.

This year, a new route will has been mapped out to cater for the increase in the numbers taking part and the course will be closed to all traffic for the duration of the race.

The race will start at the old Centrepoint Shopping Centre on the Mountrath Road, run down Main Street and head out the Ridge Road, back up the Mountmellick road, up Harpurs Lane and down the Mountrath Road.

The finish line will be at the bottom of Main Street, Portlaoise.

Over 120 people have signed up for this year’s couch to 5k run by Portlaoise A.C. and are all in training for the 5k on St. Patrick’s morning.

There will also be 3 kids fun runs U-7, U-9 and U-12 taking part before the main race with all children receiving a medal and Easter egg.

A spokesperson for the committee thanks the sponsors involved.

“The race committee would like to thank our sponsors who have come on board again this year to support the race: People First Credit Union, Midlands Park Hotel, Downey’s Autostop, Mulhall’s Supervalu and Shaws Department Stores.”

“Over €2000 in prizes along with new course record prizes (sponsored by Kia) for the first male and female will definitely attract some of the top runners from all over the country.

“Club team prizes have also been introduced for the first time and this will see local clubs from all over Laois and the midlands battle it out over this fast 5k.”

This race is chipped timed and the entry fee is €15. All finishers will receive a souvenir medal.

Organisers are keen to point out that numbers for this race will be capped and it is advised that people register online early to avoid disappointment.
