Change of venue to vote on Eighth Amendment referendum in Portlaoise

Some confused Portlaoise voters are going to the wrong place to vote in the Referendum on the Eighth Amendment today.

For the first time this year, the new Holy Family schools are hosting the poll.

Their large campus is in Summerhill, on the Southern Circular Road off the Stradbally road.

However the polling cards have no address for the new venue, causing confusion.

One voter who went to the former Scoil Mhuire NS on Church Avenue, told the Leinster Express that he met about six other voters also at the wrong place within minutes of being there.

"The polling card says the name but not the address or the Eircode. I've taken time off work to vote and I had to do laps of the town to find where the new polling station is," Leslie Culbert said.

Voting in the Referendum on the Eighth Amendment opened at 7am and closes at 10pm today, Friday, May 25.

Portlaoise electors who previously voted at the Convent NS, Sacred Heart Convent NS, new Pre-Fab Convent NS, Scoil Mhuire, St. Paul’s NS and Educate Together NS in Portlaoise are now to vote at Holy Family Junior School (Portlaoise rural) and Holy Family Senior School (Portlaoise urban), Summerhill, Portlaoise.

St. Mary’s Hall, Dublin Road Portlaoise will be the local count centre for the Referendum result.

Bringing your polling card will make the process of voting easier for you and for staff at the polling station, it has been advised.
