Traffic delays from roadworks in Portlaoise town centre

Roadworks bring temporary traffic lights in Portlaoise town centre

Temporary traffic lights in Portlaoise

There are traffic delays in the centre of Portlaoise town for the rest of this week, to Friday evening November 30.

A temporary stop/go traffic light system has been set up at Fitzmaurice Place, where the footpath is also closed while works continue on the restoration of the town's old fort.

Laois County Council has clarified to the Leinster Express that the work is related to restoration of the fort.

The partial road closure is to facilitate the undergrounding of cables across the road, for new lighting at the fort protector.

The traffic lights will be in place from 9am to 5pm today and tomorrow, Thursday and Friday November 29 and 30.

A major restoration of the Fort Protector, a 16th century English army garrison in the centre of Portlaoise, is underway to form a new visitor attraction in Laois.

Full details of the Old Fort plans here.
