A new pedestrian crossing is set to be installed at a busy roundabout on the N80 in Portlaoise in the new year.

The new pedestrian crossing will be installed on the Abbeyleix Road side of Market Square Roundabout in Portlaoise.

Cllr Willie Aird tabled a notice of motion at the December Portlaoise Municipal District meeting asking for work to start on the crossing.

He said elderly people, in particular, will benefit from the crossing as they currently have to walk to the other end of the road to cross over.

“We are a long, long time beating the drum on this one. People have to walk all the way up to Statoil to get across the road. One of our oldest ladies in Portlaoise passes maybe twice a day on this particular stretch and it will stop the people having to walk the whole way up to Statoil to get across the road,” he said.

A senior engineer at Laois County Council said funding is expected from Transport Infrastructure Ireland for the pedestrian crossing in ‘early 2019’. The work is expected to be completed by the end of March 2019.

Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald welcomed this update.

“I am looking forward to it, it’s a good response,” she said.
