Proposed Portlaoise leisure centre railings a bigger risk

“It’s a terrible accident waiting to happen.”

So said Cllr Noel Tuohy about the junction at the Ridge Road and Moneyballytyrrell Portlaoise at Portlaoise Leisure Centre.

He wants railings to encourage people to use the pedestrian crossing when leaving the centre.

However, Wes Wilkinson, area engineer said a road safety audit was carried out in 2017. It concluded that a guardrail would result in pedestrians walking in front of the guardrail to avoid a longer walk to the crossing.

He said this increase the risk of being struck by a vehicle. On this basis, Mr Wilkinson said the council does not intend installing railings at this location.
