New medical centre for Portlaoise estate.

A big new health centre beside a pub in a large Portlaoise housing estate has received the green light from Laois County Council.

Laois County Council has granted planning permission to Kilminchy Property Partnership to convert offices into a two storey medical centre in the commercial area of the estate.

The council's chief executive John Mulholland has signed off on a plan to convert offices in the same block as O'Gorman's pub and Cleland's supermarket.

The layout plans show that the two storey facility will include 14 consulting rooms with entry between the pub and shop.

The applicants say it is expected to operate between 8 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday with seven employees. The application does not set out in detail what type of health services will be provided.

Apart from being a big estate with many young families, Kilminchy is also home to the Sue Ryder Centre which provides mixed residential accommodation for elderly people.

Also located nearby is the Kilminchy Lodge Nursing Home which was purchased in 2018 by Brindley Healthcare.
