An accident will occur if cars aren’t prevented from parking near corners in a Portlaoise estate, a recent council meeting was told.

Cllr Thomasina Connell told a meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District that she lived in the estate and a number of residents had raised concerns.

Cllr Connell tabled a motion asking: “That this Council install double yellow lines at certain points of Laurel Drive, Esker Hills to prevent vehicles parking on corners and blocking the view of drivers coming onto the Main Road.”

Cllr Connell explained that there were three locations where parked cars were causing a traffic hazard.  “There are vehicles parking on the corners so you are almost half way out of Laurel Drive until you can actually see,” she said.

“It is going to cause an accident,” added Cllr Connell.

In response, Senior Executive Engineer Wes Wilkinson said: “I will make myself available with Councillor Connell on site to review the requirements for double yellow lines at this location and I will make arrangements to install double yellow lines as appropriate.”

Cllr Willie Aird added his support to the motion.
