Portlaoise man appeals for donations to worthy cause

A Laois man is hard at work, training to take part in the Dublin Marathon this October.

Portlaoise man David Jonikans told us that while he doesn't run regularly, he wishes to complete the marathon to raise funds and awareness for a very worthy cause.

"I wanted to take on a challenge for charity, and I chose Pieta for my own personal reasons. I want to give back to the charity when it gives so much when people need it," Mr Jonikans told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"I have been training for over a month now, I was officially confirmed for the marathon a few days ago through Pieta, it's starting to feel more real now and I'm taking it more seriously!" he said.

The 20 year old has been blown away by the support he has received from Laois locals.

"People have been so supportive of this. I launched the fundraiser on Saturday, and I had over €370 by Monday morning, just in a couple of days. My family and friends have been particularly supportive," he explained.

Mr Jonikans hopes to highlight the need for more discussions on mental health.

"Mental health is something that I think should be talked about more, and campaigned on more. The suicide rates for both men and women is devastating. We need the right sort of awareness out there.

“Everyone goes through something difficult, at some stage in their life. People don't know who they can turn to. Pieta is brilliant, and I think this fundraiser is a brilliant way to do something," he said.

With a background in the gym, Mr Jonikans is finding the marathon to be more of a mental challenge, than a physical one.

"I've never done a marathon before. The goal for this fundraiser is €1,500, it'd be great to reach it," he said.

“Every mile I run is a reminder of why I’m doing this to make a real difference for those who need it most. It’s not just about crossing a finish line, it’s about showing up, pushing through, and turning effort into impact.

Your support whether it’s a donation, a share, or simply cheering me on means more than words can say. Together, we can take every step a little further. Every donation over €10 will have their name on my race day shirt.

“I’ve chosen to represent this charity because of my own struggles, and I feel like the cause is really great and I just want to show people that you are capable of much more than you realise. Every mile matters. Every gesture helps. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” he finished.
