Laois has had more evictions than neighbouring counties

More than 150 eviction notices were served in Laois from July to December  2022, according to the State body that oversees renting.

Notices of Termination received by the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) are published for all counties.

From July to September last year a total of 88 notices to quit were notified to the RTB from landlords in Laois. This represented nearly 2% of the 4,741 notices declared nationally.

There was a reduction in the last quarter of 2022 with 65 eviction notices issued. This represented 1.5% of the 4,329 issued in the months up to Christmas.

More notices were issued in Laois than in neighbouring Offaly, Carlow and Kilkenny in each of the two quarters of 2022.

Nationally, landlords intending on selling the rental property is the biggest reason why notices to quit were issued.

The last quarter's figures were published as the Government’s temporary winter eviction ban was lifted on April 1.

While there is a legal obligation for landlords to notify the RTB a tenancy has ended, the board says it is important to note that NoTs are self-reported by landlords. The RTB says figures are based on what it receives.

The Residential Tenancies (Deferment of Termination Dates of Certain Tenancies) Act 2022 came into effect on 29 October 2022. This was temporary legislation that covered a set period of time known as the 'winter emergency period' (30 October 2022 to 31 March 2023).

The legislation meant that in certain tenancies which were due to terminate between 30 October 2022 and 31 March 2023 may have had the tenancy termination date deferred. Tenancies that were due to end before 30 October 2022 or that
are due to end after 31 March are not covered by the protections.
