Huge drop in planning permissions granted for properties in Laois

There has been a massive drop in the number of planning permissions granted by Laois County Council.

There has been a massive drop in the number of planning permissions granted for houses and apartments in Laois, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). 


The number of houses granted planning permission in the county between April and June is down 87% compared to the first three months of the year. The figure has fallen from 640 planning permissions granted in the first quarter to just 83 in the second quarter of the year. 


Similarly planning permissions for apartments have fallen by 60% down from 45 units granted between January and March to 18 between April and June. 


Nationally the CSO said the total number of dwelling units approved in the second quarter fell by 2.4% to 8,513 units from 8,723 units in the second quarter of 2023.
