IN PICTURES: Miraculous renovation of Laois building in Portlaoise further revealed

Multi-million euro development converting former Portlaoise convent into social housing

Built as a convent in 1830 it incorporates elements of the 'Stonehouse' or 'Anthony Rogers' House' and a tower.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the building was used for a variety of purposes - a constable's house, a gaol, an infirmary and finally a convent for the Presentation Sisters from 1824 into the late 20th century.

The Sophia Housing project is being developed in partnership with Laois County Council with Government support. A total of 52 homes will be provided when completed. It is hoped that new homes will be completed by the start of 2026.
