Huge bill to repair and relet Laois council houses

On average, €11,000 in grants was spent renovating each of 60 vacated Laois council houses so they could get new tenants this year.

A total of €660,000 was granted from the Government to Laois County Council to do the works.

There are currently 21 vacant houses owned by Laois County Council awaiting repairs and reletting, with seven more recently bought.

“Works are either ongoing at these properties or specifications are being prepared for works to be carried out,” the council stated at its recent meeting.

In the first 10 months of 2022, 53 keys were handed back by tenants, and 63 houses were relet.

Laois County Council owns about 1,300 council homes across the county.
