Portlaoise father of famous Laois athletics family passes away

The death has occurred of the father of the successful Laois family of athletes who have run and medalled for Ireland.

David Mulhare of Sheffield Cross, Portlaoise, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on November 26.

Beloved husband of Margaret, he was a dearly loved father to Cathy, Dan, Michael, Maggie, Mary and David.

Some of his children competed for Ireland in athletics, most notably his daughter Mary. She has won team bronze and silver medals at the European Cross Country Championships with Ireland.

David was present with Mary and other family members when she was honoured with a Civic Reception by Laois County Council for her sporting achievements in 2023.

His son Michael won a gold medal in the European U-23 cross-country championships in 2010. 

A well-known builder, David himself achieved national fame when he joined three of his children to claim second place in the  Ireland's Fittest Families TV series in 2017.

Cherished grandfather to Millie, Ollie, Ada, Charlotte and Isabelle, he is deeply regretted by his mother-in-law Margaret Norton, his brother Joe, his sisters Toni, Margaret and Elizabeth, daughters-in-law Ashling, Louise, Jen and partners including Enda, brothers-in-law, sisters in law, Nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

He is also mourned by all his friends and colleagues in the construction industry. MORE BELOW PHOTO.

David is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Kathleen, brothers, Michael and Brendan, sisters, Nina and Breda.

His remains repose at his family home on Friday from 3 pm until 8 pm, with Rosary at 7.30 pm. Removal on Saturday morning to arrive at SS Peter and Paul's Church for 12 noon Requiem Mass. Interment will follow in SS Peter and Pauls Cemetery Portlaoise. House private on Saturday morning, please.
