Viva Espana - Laois students enjoy unforgettable historic trip from Portlaoise

Transition year students in Portlaoise have just returned with great memories from an unforgettable and historic school tour to Spain.

On Sunday, February 19, 27 very excited Dunamase College pupils and two of their teachers flew out to Granada in Spain.  This was a momentous occasion as it was the first time that students from the school went on a tour abroad. They began each morning with a Spanish class after a traditional Spanish breakfast.  In their classes they learned about Granada, its attractions and famous landmarks.  They explored the city and walked through the stunning historic centre and its moresque streets.  Lunch was typical Spanish tapas.

Day two saw them have fun with a treasure hunt through the city, where they had to complete a series of tasks and use their Spanish to do so.  The hunt ended in the ancient part of the city where they climbed to a viewing point to take in the breath-taking views of Granada, the Alhambra and some authentic flamenco playing.

After classes on the third day they visited the majestic Alhambra and the Generalife palaces.  They were truly amazed by the beauty and architecture.  The afternoon was spent strolling through the old Arabic market, visiting the local craft shops and monuments.  The students spent every opportunity they had using and practicing their Spanish.

A school tour would not be complete without a bit of shopping!

On their last full day they visited the Nevada shopping centre (the largest in the area) and spent the day shopping and engaging with learning activities while they shopped.  They had to complete a series of fun tasks aimed at boosting their knowledge of Spanish.  They enjoyed lunch against the snowy back drop of Sierra Nevada.

The tired but happy students made their way home to Ireland from Malaga Airport on Friday, February 24. They had a fantastic week sightseeing, speaking Spanish and experiencing Spanish culture. They have made memories that will last a lifetime and cannot wait to share these with the whole school community, families and friends.

Thanks to all the parents and Transition Spain for the support and effort this week in making this trip a fantastic and very successful experience.  Thank you also to teachers Lauren and Christian who travelled with the students and ensured that they had a wonderful experience.

¡Hasta pronto España!
