"Five students received over 550 points, 18 over 500, which means close to 10% of our Leaving Cert established cohort received over 500 points," said the principal.
The five students who received over 550 points were Maya Lyons, Avril Reilly, Harish Katta, Avril Whittle and Daniel Brady. Daniel’s sister Grace was one of 220 first year students who started in Coláiste ĺosagáin today.
"Once again, the Leaving Cert Applied results were eye watering with 88% achieving distinctions," Mr Brown said.
"It was 70% last year and we thought that was excellent. Three students secured full marks – 100% - which means they are in line to receive the Fergal Quinn National Award for excellence," he said.
The three students are Chantelle Dowling, Kelly Lyons and John Whelan. Another exceptional LCA student, Corbin Fuller achieved 99%.
"These results are a testimony to the hard work of all our students who should be very proud of their excellent achievements," Mr Brown said.
"I always said you would have to go far to find as dedicated and committed staff as you do here and these results continue to prove that. On behalf of the Board of Management and our three Deputy Principals – Ms. Walsh, Ms. O’Sullivan and Mr. McGlynn thank you.
"While it is important to acknowledge those that achieved high points we are extremely proud of the results across the board. Congratulations to all our students and their families.
The Leaving Cert class of 2024 included the son of one staff member – Sean O’Donnell, son of Fintan, who did very well.
There were also staff members living elsewhere who had family members doing the Leaving Certificate, and school staff send their good wishes to them.
"This has been a very good few weeks of our school," Mr Brown continued.
"Earlier in the month, our planning application for our new school has been submitted to Offaly County Council and now these results.
"It is a great start to the new school year for our school community. We are the only secondary school in Portarlington and we are fortunate to have such great support from parents and the local community.
"We are very appreciative of that. With over 1100 students we are one of the largest schools in the Midlands. Any visitor to our school always remarks about the calmness of the school and the positive and happy atmosphere.
"That itself is a reflection of our students and staff. We wish the class of 2024 continued happiness and success in their future endeavours," Principal Brown finished.
