Mayo National School, Crettyard
A councillor said traffic needs to be slowed considerably outside a National School in Laois.
Independent Councillor Ben Brennan tabled a motion asking “that County Council put in place safety measures on the R431 outside Mayo National School.”
In response, Senior Executive Engineer, Philip McVeigh “Laois County Council will arrange for special traffic calming roadmarkings to be installed along this stretch of the R431 outside the national school.”
Cllr Brennan was sceptical and said, “it won’t really slow down the traffic, will it?”
He said the measure may work for a month or so but then “they will fly through it” because they know it’s not a ramp.
“We will try that first but if it doesn’t work we will put in a ramp,” he said.
The motion at the monthly meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District was supported by Fianna Fáil Cllr Padraig Fleming.
