Students at a Portlaoise school have beaten over 2,000 fellow Irish students to represent Ireland in the 2025 European Money Quiz.

Jodie Komolafe and Richelle Alexander, third-year students at Scoil Chríost Rí are heading to Brussels to represent Ireland in the European Championships on May 23.

The European Money Quiz is Europe’s largest financial school competition which aims to promote financial literacy among 13-15 year old students.

The live European finals, hosted by the European Banking Federation in Brussels, will see teams of two from 30 countries play directly against each other in a bid to become European champions and share in a prize fund of €5,000 for their school.

“Understanding money and finance is a critical life skill for young people and financial education plays a key role in our school here in Portlaoise," said Seán Smyth, Principal of Scoil Chríost Rí.

"We actively encourage students to develop their financial literacy in meaningful and engaging ways and the European Money Quiz is a highlight each year as its live online format makes learning about finance interactive, relevant, and fun.

"We’re especially proud of Jodie and Richelle for their fantastic achievement, and the whole school is behind them as they prepare to compete in the Brussels finals later this month," he said.

Brian Hayes, Chief Executive of BPFI praised the students for their hard work.

“It was fantastic to see over 2,000 students from more than 100 schools across Ireland take part in this year’s Irish finals of the European Money Quiz," Mr Hayes.

"Jodie and Richelle have done incredibly well to make it through to the European stage—a real testament to their knowledge and hard work. We hope their success will encourage even more students to get involved next year and showcase their skills in business and finance.

"The European Money Quiz is a key event in our calendar for promoting financial literacy, and BPFI is proud to support the winners as they travel to Brussels to represent Ireland in the European finals," Mr Hayes finished.

The European Money Quiz is part of European Money Week (EMW), a joint initiative between the European Banking Federation and 30 banking associations across Europe - including BPFI, which aims to boost financial literacy levels and raise awareness on the benefits of financial education.

The quiz is supported by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), with the support of the Business Studies Teacher’s Association of Ireland (BSTAI).
