The school said Monday evening, May 12 was made even more special with the return of past pupil James Phelan.
He fondly recalled his time as a Meitheal leader and shared his inspiring journey from securing a basketball scholarship in the U.S. to returning home to play with the Portlaoise Panthers. James fittingly presented the 2024–25 Sixth Year Meitheal Awards to the very group he had once mentored as first years.
Continuing the basketball theme, Killester Superleague player Paul Dick spoke about his own journey after school, overcoming injuries to pursue his sporting passion. Paul presented our many sporting awards, including gold medals to our U19 A All-Ireland basketball champions, with a special nod to Captain Cillian O’Connell, who had previously marked Paul in club competition.
The audience was treated to music by local band The Controversy, featuring Adam Reilly, Erin O'Dwyer, Aidan Dermody, and Nieve Leath.
The evening concluded with the presentation of the school awards:
The night ended on a high note, with several students receiving a wide range of awards, including subject excellence, extra-curricular recognition, and outstanding achievement awards.
The school said a heartfelt farewell was extended to MC, Ms. Deirdre Carroll, who was marking her 15th and final year hosting the event and the end of 28 "remarkable" years at St Mary's CBS.
"It was truly a night to remember, celebrating the best of our school community," said the school.
