Laois County Council was asked to consider putting 3D ramps outside a school in Laois.
Independent Cllr Ben Brennan asked in a motion “that Laois County Council give an update on the school safety zone at Mayo N.S as previously promised. ”
In a written response, a Road Design Executive Engineer stated that: “Road Design would meet with Cllr Brennan on site and assess the school location from a safety perspective. All Potential safety measures will be explored.”
Cllr Brennan suggested the council introduce 3D speed ramps which he said gave the “illusion that there is ramps” even though no ramps are in place. He said the 3D ramps are painted on to look like real speed ramps. “We need to do something,” he insisted.
He described the location as “a death trap” and said action was needed to improve safety as soon as possible.
Senior Executive Engineer Tom Drennan said “there are a number different schemes that schools can apply for.”
Independent Cllr Aisling Moran supported the motion. She said summer holidays are coming and this would be a good time for the council to carry out work.

She said the 3D ramps were a good idea. “I think they did it over in Emo and it is working,” she said.
The issue was discussed during the latest meeting of Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District.
