ASD units announced for three Laois primary schools

New Autism Classes in three Laois schools have been announced for Laois.

These new classes are understood to have been approved by the Department of Education.

They are St Fintan’s Boys School, Mountrath, Barnashrone NS in Ballyfin, and Scoil Phadraig Naofa boys school in Mountmellick.

Sean Fleming TD announced the classes on Friday April 12.

"I am pleased to confirm that the Department of Education & Skills have approved new Special Autism (ASD) Primary Classes in  Laois.

"This is indeed very good news for all families who have been trying to get these special classes as over many years now insufficient resources were made available for children in these situations.  Early intervention is the key and it can improve the long term situation for all involved.

"I look forward to these classes being set up as urgently as possible which I know will be of great benefit to the children involved and all the parents and families will be fully supportive of these new arrangements," Dep Fleming said.

The Department of Education is yet to confirm the new units.

Parents in Mountmellick have previously called for an ASD unit for their children. Read that story here.
