Student Sarah does Laois proud at Linguistics Olympiad

Just one Laois student made it through to a tough language decoding All Ireland Final this month.

Sarah Daly, a Transition Year student from Mountmellick Community School was the only Laois representative at the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad Final which took place in DCU on Wednesday March 9.

Having successfully come through the challenging Preliminary Round in January, she was one of only 100 students from the whole island of Ireland to reach the Final.

Her school has congratulated Sarah for her fine achievement.

"Sarah did a great job of representing her class, her school, her community and her county. She finished in the top twelve – a fantastic achievement for a first time participant," they said.

Sarah and the other finalists had faced deciphering anything from Egyptian hieroglyphics to interpreting ancient Mayan poetry to decoding numerical spy codes.

Four winners from the final now go on to represent Ireland at the International Linguistics Olympiad held on the Isle of Man in July.
