Lions AFC has officially announced the commencement of a €650,000 Astro Development Project, a major milestone in the club’s long-term vision to deliver top-class facilities in Durrow.
The Laois club confirmed this week that, following a comprehensive planning and tendering process, a contractor has now been appointed to begin work on the full-size, all-weather pitch at its grounds on the Cork Road. Construction is scheduled to start in June 2025 and run through to September.
This development builds on the momentum that began in December 2024, when the club secured a €170,259 Sports Capital Grant to kick-start the project. At that time, Lions AFC launched its ambitious “Drive for 25” campaign, a strategic plan to future-proof the club’s infrastructure and support its 457 playing members.
The new pitch is set to be a game-changer for both the club and the wider Laois community, providing year-round facilities for training and matches across all age groups.
Club Chairman Adrian Sheppard described the announcement as a defining moment in Lions AFC’s journey.
"This is a milestone moment for Lions AFC. The commitment shown by our members, volunteers, and supporters has been incredible, and this investment is a testament to that dedication. We look forward to watching the works progress over the summer and seeing the long-term benefits this will bring to the club
"We will continue to keep members updated as the project progresses. Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey. The best is yet to come," he said on the club's Facebook page.
To support the development, Lions AFC is continuing its strong tradition of community fundraising. On Saturday, May 31, a special event will take place at the Castle Arms Hotel: the local debut of Songo Music Bingo. Billed as “the most fun you can have on a night out,” the event will combine music, bingo, and prizes, with tickets available locally or online through Eventbrite for €20.
With work now set to begin this summer, Lions AFC is urging continued support as it pushes to deliver one of the most significant developments in its history, and a lasting legacy for future generations.
