Emlyn O’Reilly, who sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of just 50 following a short illness, was a much-loved figure in Portlaoise and beyond. A passionate sportsman, he served as Captain of The Heath Golf Club in 2021 and later as its President, while also giving countless hours to Portlaoise AFC as club groundsman. His dedication, warmth, and involvement in so many sporting organisations left a lasting legacy that was fondly remembered throughout the day.

The match itself was played in the competitive but good-natured spirit that O’Reilly epitomised. After 90 minutes of end-to-end action, the teams could not be separated. A penalty shootout was required to decide the winner, with the Portlaoise Legends eventually holding their nerve to lift the inaugural cup.

The event proved a resounding success off the pitch too, raising €1,000 for Friends of the Midlands Regional Hospital, Tullamore. A special presentation saw Emlyn’s family receive a commemorative pennant to mark the occasion, underlining the deep sense of respect and affection in which he is held. Organisers confirmed that the Emlyn Cup will now become an annual fixture, ensuring his memory will continue to unite the community year after year.

Portlaoise AFC expressed their gratitude to everyone who played, supported, donated, and helped make the day so memorable.
