A Laois teenager has taken a major step in his football career, signing for Premier League side AFC Bournemouth.

Ade Solanke, originally from Portarlington and a former pupil of St Patrick’s BNS, joined the club on a long-term deal from Ligue 1 outfit FC Lorient earlier this month, coinciding with his 18th birthday.

The promising left-back has already represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level 31 times, from under-15 to under-18, and was part of the squad at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar. Solanke came through the Shamrock Rovers youth system before moving to Lorient in January 2025, having made the Irish champions’ matchday squad on two occasions.

“I am over the moon,” Solanke said after completing the move. “It feels like it’s been a long time coming, but I’m delighted to be here and I can’t wait to get started. With AFC Bournemouth being a Premier League club, a move like this is something I’ve dreamt of. I’m grateful, and I thank God, I’m really happy. The vision of where everyone wants this club to go played a big part in my decision.”

Sam Gisborne, Head of Academy at Bournemouth, welcomed the young defender. “We’re really pleased to welcome Ade Solanke to the academy. He’s someone we’ve been monitoring for a period of time, and we believe this is a great environment for him to continue his development,” Gisborne said. READ MORE BELOW PICTURE.

Solanke follows in the footsteps of other Lorient graduates who have joined Bournemouth, including Junior Kroupi, who has already made a significant impact this season with seven goals since his debut in August.

For the teenager from Portarlington, the move represents a huge opportunity to develop at the highest level of English football and continue his rapid rise through the international youth ranks.
