Arlington resumed their league campaign after the Christmas break with a well earned three points against Tullamore rivals CK Utd.
The first half was an even affair, with both sides showing a certain amount of rustiness after their lay-off. CK took the lead midway through the half with a fine strike from the edge of the area that gave Brian McAuley no chance.
Arlington’s Robbie McNeill had the best chance of the half but, when played through on goal, he shot tamely at the away ‘keeper. McNeill did not let this affect him however and when given a similar chance minutes later, he made no mistake and levelled the game just before the break.
CK started the second half well and were unlucky not to regain the lead when a deflected effort rebounded back off the crossbar. Arlington played themselves more into the game and were rewarded when Shaun Pierre Cretaro sprang the offside trap and rounded the ‘keeper to slot to the net.
CK were not happy with the linesman’s decision and the ‘keeper took his protests too far and was shown a red card. Credit to the Tullamore side, who went straight down the other end and were awarded a penalty when their striker tumbled in the home area, but their best hope of getting back into the game ended when the penalty was fired wide.
Arlington wrapped up the game late on when an in-swinging free kick was misjudged by the stand in ‘keeper and Cretaro bundled in his second.
A special mention for right back Paul Hyland and substitutes Kevin Dodson and Lee Freeman who all contributed to the win after playing 90 minutes for Arlington B that morning in their friendly against Walsh Island.
Arlington AFC are holding a Table Quiz on Friday, January 16 in the Barrow Lodge, Portarlington as a fundraiser for a player injury fund. All support on the night would be appreciated.
