Arlington’s second team opened their league campaign at home to Birr Town on a wet Sunday morning.
The home team started brightly and were soon on the front foot, but the Offaly men grew into the game and managed to take the lead mid way through the half. Arlington responded well and after good work down the right from Shaun Pierre Cretaro, the ball was squared to Chris Malone who squeezed the ball home under pressure from two defenders.
Birr retook the lead just before the break, when a mix up in the home defence allowed their striker to nip in between defender and goalie to find the net.
The second half was another even affair and Malone got his second of the day when he sprung the offside trap and lobbed the advancing keeper. The game could have gone either way at this stage and Christopher Higgins had a great chance for Arlington to take the lead for the first time, but he volleyed over at the far post when he would of been better going with his head.
The game changed when Mark Donnelly received a second yellow card and Birr were able to make their numerical advantage count. Tired legs in the home team allowed an overlap to develop in midfield and Birr were able to snatch the winner in the closing minutes. The result was hard on the Arlington men who deserved at least a share of the points.
