Portlaoise Town travelled to play Killavilla United in this top of the table clash as both teams were tied at 15 points each at the head of the table.

Killavilla started brightly and aided by the breeze were in on goal on two occasions but good goalkeeping by Sean McCormack kept them out. Oran Murphy went close on 15 minutes but was denied by a brilliant stop by the Killavilla keeper.

Portlaoise took the lead on 18 minutes when a brilliant cross from Craig Reddin was headed home by Fionn Scully. Two minutes later a brilliant through ball by Conor Lacken set up Oran Murphy and he raced clear to fire low past the keeper to make it 2-0 to Portlaoise.

Then in the space of 10 minutes the whole game changed as Killavilla scored three goals in quick succession to turn this game around and leave the score at the break 3-2 to the home side.

In the first attack of the second half the Killavilla midfielder broke through on the left but Sean McCormack got down well to make a good save. Portlaoise attacked at the other end and Oran Murphy was put through on goals and fired low into the bottom corner to level the match at 3-3 on 45 minutes.

Ronan McEvoy was then introduced up front for Portlaoise and proceeded to turn this match in the Towns favour. On 50 minutes some brilliant skills by McEvoy set up Oran Murphy and he fired home to complete his hat-trick and make the score 4-3. On the hour Oran Murphy returned the compliment and set up McEvoy with a tap in from five yards to make the score 5-3 to Portlaoise.

With 70 minutes on the clock, McEvoy raced clear from the halfway line and he chipped the keeper to make it 6-3 to Portlaoise and complete the scoring on the day. Portlaoise were best served on the day by Sean McCormack Ciaran Rowney Ruairi Lewis Oran Murphy Ronan McEvoy and Man of the Match Brian Sheehy.

Killavilla dominated this game in the latter stages of the first half and only Portlaoise Towns superior fitness and stamina told in the the second half especially the final 15 minutes when this game was won. Portlaoise now top the league table from Killavilla by three points with six wins in six games and also have a game in hand.

Portlaoise’s next match is next Sunday when the play Granada F.C in the 3rd Round of the SFAI Cup in Blackrock
