Portlaoise won the League title on Thursday night with Seafords win over Greenhills. However they went a goal down after two minutes.
On 17 minutes, following a short corner, they went two goals down and were facing an uphill battle. They got a foothold in the game on 32 minutes when Paul Cahillane pulled a goal back from just inside the home side’s penalty area.
This acted as a spur to Portlaois and Dan Dunne on 38 minuteswith a header and Shane Brophy on 42 minutes with a shot both went close.
If Portlaoise had a poor start to the first half, the opposite went for the second with Shaun Tobin setting up Paul Cahillane for an equaliser on 47 minutes and three minutes later from a corner Brian Bowe headed back across goal and Shane Brophy put Portlaoise ahead.
The Portlaoise advantage went to 4-2 on 59 minutes when Shaun Tobin stabbed home from eight yards out after the Castle Park keeper stopped a shot from Darren Rogers. Portlaoise were now well on top and went close through Darren Rogers on 62 minutes with a shot that was blocked by a defender on the line and Jason Bergin on 64 minutes with a long range shot that just went over the bar.
Castle Park pulled a goal back from a corner on 79 minutes but Portlaose were to have the last say on 88 minutes from a free kick routine which saw Paul Cahillane and Jason Murphy set up Brian Bowe to score from close in.
It was somwhat of a Jekyll and Hyde display from Portlaoise with their normally solid defence at sea early on but the second half was better.
