A slimmer who transformed her life by losing 5 stone is using her success to reach out and help other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too.
Michelle Grainger joined her local Slimming World group in Portlaoise, 4 years ago and dropped 5 stone in weight.
Michelle has successfully run the Slimming World groups in Birr & Monasterevin for the past 2 years and has fully trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Now she is extremely excited to be opening up a morning group in Birr at the end of this month in the aim of reaching out to even more people who would like to lose weight and keep it off for good without ever having to go hungry.
Michelle had struggled with her weight since her early 20’s but everything came to a head in October 2011 when a visit to the doctors left her devastated. She was diagnosed as having PCOS (Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome) which affects 6-10% of the female population. She was told she was borderline type 2 diabetic and that along with a whole other list of symptoms, being overweight was common in women with PCOS and she could only hope to maintain her weight or lose a little at best but that it would more than likely always be an issue for her.
That was the final push needed to take action and in January 2012 she faced up to the shocking state of her health and made what would be a life changing decision to attend her local Slimming World group.
Not having much confidence in herself, she convinced her mum to tag along on that first faithful night on the 19th January 2012. She remembers feeling extremely nervous and completely overwhelmed before going into the room, but not for long, as the lovely consultant greeted them at the door and welcomed them into the group. She knew straight away she had made the right decision.
“Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets or shakes but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet.
“The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself”.
Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat , being part of a friendly, open, non-judgemental group, combined with the amazing power of Food Optimising and constant support from the consultant helped Michelle to drop the lb’s and stones in no time at all.
“SlimmingWorld has not only changed how I look on the outside, it has helped make me a much more positive and outgoing person in general, it has lifted my self confidence and self belief and made me realise that life is for living.”
As the numbers dropped on the scales, she found herself taking on many new challenges and has taken up new activities she previously never would have dreamed of attempting. She is now a member of her local triathlon club Trilogy and is currently preparing to compete in Dublin City Tri in the Phoenix Park on Sunday 28th of August.
“I never thought I would even run to the end of the road let alone take part in such a challenging sport like triathlon.
“Slimming World has given me the encouragement and confidence to do it and now I’ve found an activity I love I no longer see being active as a chore or something to dread, plus it’s widened my circle of friends and given me another social outlet I was missing out on before I lost my weight”
The icing on the cake to her weightloss journey was the happy and healthy arrival of her first baby, a daughter Robyn, in early January this year.
Michelle’s new morning Slimming World group will be held at The County Arms Hotel every Wednesday at 9:30am from the 31st August. For more information or to join Michelle’s group either pop along or call her on 083-3343679.
