The Portlaoise Boys U-12 basketball team travelled to Newbridge to play Kildare Gliders in the Midland Area League Competition.
Portlaoise started the better with early baskets from Brochan O'Reilly and Eoghan Dempsey. As the quarter went on their was little or nothing between the teams, Portlaoise had good performances from Eoin Murphy and Aaron Dooley who has just returned after an injury that had kept him out for six weeks. Portlaoise held a seven point lead thanks to baskets from Brochan O'Reilly and their vice-captain Cathal McEvoy.
The second quarter continued much the same with both teams battleing hard for every ball. Jack Byrne and David Moore put in good work for Portlaoise. As the quarter went on Portlaoise began for the first time to dominate resulting in baskets from their ballhandler Cathal Mc Evoy and Brochan O Reilly.
As the half-time whistle approached Portlaoise were working hard on the defensive end through Jack Byrne and Eoin Murphy to see them hold an ten point lead at the break 19-9.
Kildare Gliders came out the stronger team in the second half and were rewarded with the first couple of baskets. Portlaoise on the other hand despite good work from Michael Lynch and Cathal Mc Evoy were guilty of poor finishing around the basket.
As the quarter went on Portlaoise seemed to settle again and it was their big men Aaron Dooley and Eoghan Dempsey that kept the score board ticking over. The last quarter saw the bigger and stronger Portlaoise lads take full control with good movement of the ball and fine shooting from Jack Byrne and Brochan O Reilly who was top scorer of the game with an excellent 12 points.
As the game came to a close Portlaoise showed composure to control the ball with good work from Aaron Dooley and Cathal Mc Evoy to go on to a well deserved win.
