Portlaoise Leisure Centre hosted the grand finale of a unique cross sport and community initiative last week.
Children from a cross Laois gathered on Thursday July 31 for the Games on the Green event. It marked the end of Laois County Councils innovative new programme which brings the coaching of Gaelic Games, soccer & rugby onto the local green spaces.
In May 440 children registered to participate in the programme. All took part in sessions delivered by the FAI, Leinster Rugby & GAA coaches.
The participating areas of Maunbawn and Kiln Lane in Mountrath, Knockmay and Moneyballytyrrell in Portlaoise and Kilnacourt and Link Road in Portarlington enjoyed a resurgence of activity on their open spaces. Every four weeks a new sport was coached.
“Feedback from parents & children has been excellent “stated Ann Marie Maher Laois County Council Sport & Leisure Officer, who designed the programme with the sporting bodies. The programme hopes to increase activity levels in children aged 6-13 years, but also encourage children to come out & play together in their local areas.
Games on the Green will return next Spring of 2015.
