Sean Mortimer had been chairman of the hurling committee prior to his election as Vice-Chairman last night.
Camross man edges out O'Neill by three votes in only position contested on the night.
Sean Mortimer sprung the only real surprise at last night's Laois GAA Convention when he pipped Peter O'Neill for the position as Vice-Chairman.
O'Neill had been in the role for the last four years, and would have been hoping to see out his five year term before having a run at Chairman in 2017. However, in what was the only election for a county board position on the night, Mortimer beat the Portlaoise club man by just three votes, 72 to 69.
Speaking afterwards, Mortimer said. "I'd like to say hard luck to Peter O'Neill, and I know he has done, and will do, a huge amount for Laois GAA. It's unbelievable really how close it was, but that's the luck of the draw.
"I just want to say that I will work as hard as I can for every club in Laois, and I if there is anything I can do you, call me any time. Thanks again for your votes."
Mortimer, from Camross, had been chairman of the Hurling Committee in recent years, and it remains to be seen if he will combine that role with his new position as Vice-Chairman.
O'Neill, who was also nominated for Central Council delegate, subsequently withdrew his name for that position, and will hold no role on the county board in 2017. He is currently spearheading the organizing committee for the 2017 All-Ireland Hurling Féile, which is being held in Kilkenny, Carlow and Wexford.
All other officers were returned unopposed.
