Aidan Kelly is now the new course record holder
While it has been a quiet weekend for most sports across the county, there was one piece of significant news in Killenard earlier this morning.
Playing in a Single Stableford competition in the Heritage Golf Club, member Aidan Kelly went around in a magnificent 8 under par, carding a 64 and breaking the previous course record held by Barry Howlin (66).
Despite the tough, windy conditions on Saturday morning, Kelly, who plays off a handicap of +1, birdied the first hole of the Ballesteros championship course to get his day off to the ideal start.
He followed that with five consecutive pars, before finishing the front nine in style with three birdies in a row on holes 7, 8 and 9.
Kelly continued his birdie streak entering the back nine on holes 10 and 11, before saving par on the difficult 12th hole. He would birdie three of the next four holes (13, 14 and 16), and capped his round off in typical fashion by chipping in to save par on the 18th hole, keeping his scorecard bogey-free.
Kelly is coached by resident PGA professional Eddie Doyle, who runs Eddie Doyle Golf Academy just down the road from the Heritage Golf Club in Killenard.
