Laois Powerlifter Fiona Dowling from Ballacolla has conquered the world by winning gold in the Deadlift competition at the World Powerlifting Union’s Powerlifting Championships in Emmeloord, Holland.

Competing in the 60kg Female Open Bodyweight Category in the Single Lift Deadlift Competition, Fiona lifted an incredible 125kgs (19st 10lbs) in the World Final.

That lift, which was more than twice her own bodyweight, was a new personal best for Fiona and a new World Record.

Fiona had secured her place on the Irish team for the World Championships by winning the Irish Powerlifting Organization’s National Single Lift Championships in Limerick when she lifted 115kg.

Fiona trains in Body, Health & Fitness in Sandyford where she is trained by fellow Powerlifter Declan McMullan, from Antrim. Declan secured a massive 290kg deadlift record in the 100kg male open bodyweight category in both competitions.
