Laois kickboxer Shane Culleton won the -71kg Irish National Full Contact Kickboxing title on Saturday in Crumlin Boxing Club.
Shane, who is from Mountmellick and trains out of Laois Martial Arts, has been training in Martial Arts for over 15 years. He has trained continuously for the last year, doing over 10 sessions a week as well as travelling to Dublin three times a week to get himself to the level that is required, not just to compete but to win.
Shane commented that when he got third place last year he totally changed his training routines, looking closer at his diet, sleep patterns and his mental game as well. “I knew that to be in with any chance of winning that all of these changes had to be made. My coach Jimmy Upton, who is the National Team Coach, knew what I needed to do to win the title and he always had the belief that I could do it. I have been so lucky to have had the support of so many people to help me to get to where I am today.”
“A huge thank you to the Irish Team, my family, my club mates and my coach for all their help and support in helping me achieve my dream of being National Champion. I believe that dreams can come true if you believe in yourself enough and surround yourself with the positive people”.
Having secured his place on the Irish National Team for 2012, Shane will now go on to represent Ireland abroad first in England in August for the WOMMA World Championships and then the European Championships in Romania in September. For details on kickboxing in Laois contact 087-2768843
