Portlaoise travelled to Carlow in the third round of the Super Eight Leinster League, Portlaoise need to win all matches in this group to qualify for the semi-final.
Carlow started well with a break away try from some poor defending on behalf of Portlaoise. Portlaoise responded within minutes with a try from William Ward and a Conor Kelly conversion.
Tom Martin soon went over for a second try. Carlow responded with another break away try and this time were successful with the conversion. Dermot Joyce scored next for Portlaoise and Conor Kelly converted to bring the score to 19-12 in favour of Portlaoise.
The second half was a tough battle with some good defending from both sides. Carlow scored a third try midway through the second half but failed to convert. With the score now at 19-17, Portlaoise had to throw everything at Carlow to hold out for the two point win.
Portlaoise had to use their full bench due to injuries and credit is due to those players who came on and stood up to the mark when called upon
Portlaoise will now break for the Christmas period and will resume in early January with two away matches in both Gorey and Boyne.
The team and management wish to thank all parents for their support during the year and we wish all players and parents a Happy Christmas and successful New Year.
