Companies honoured by Irish Sports Council for getting active

Five companies were presented with awards on June 7 in recognition of their success in the Irish Sports Council Challenge. More than 50 companies responded to the Council’s call to get their workforce more physically active in the month of May.

The basic concept was simple; companies were challenged to motivate their employees to get involved in sport and physical activity together in the workplace. The response was fantastic with great ideas emerging such as; Swimming, running and cycling challenges; Lunchtime walking groups; Healthy eating policies; Motivational speakers in the workplace

The background to the Sports Council Challenge was that the Council staff decided to set themselves the challenge of become more active in May 2012 using group activities scheduled around the work day. There was an enthusiastic response from the all colleagues and lots of great ideas emerged. It was decided to use the Council’s network to spread the idea. Over a couple of weeks the idea got some momentum with 55 companies getting involved

John Treacy, Chief Executive of the Irish Sports Council said: “We are delighted with the response to the challenge. It started out as an idea from within the Council. We decided to spread the word through our contacts and it took off. There is a real desire out there within companies and their employees to take on this idea so, based on this initial success, we are going to make it a bigger event in 2013.”

Robert Walsh of Sigmar Recruitment, which won Best Overall Company, said“I heard about the Sports Council Challenge and thought it was a good idea. The basic concept of companies contributing to the health and wellness of the workforce struck a chord with us. What has been great is that all the colleagues took ownership of the programme and really got involved. There has been a great buzz around the place for the last month and we are all delighted with how it turned out”.

Laois Youth Selected for Leinster U-15 Cricket Team

Laois County Cricket Club is delighted to announce that David Murphy has been selected for the Leinster U15 Inter Provincial Cricket Team. David is the only member of the squad from a club outside Dublin and it’s a great achievement for both David and Laois CCC. Starting in a squad of 52 last October, David trained throughout the winter and was selected for the final squad of 24 at Easter. Following intensive training and trial games the team was finally announced last Wednesday. The team travels next week to Stormont in Belfast where they play a 3 day interprovincial series and go on tour to Wolverhampton in August. David is a fast bowler and follows a tradition of Laois CCC producing good bowlers; he is a regular member of the 1st and 2nd teams and only started playing cricket just over two years ago.

The selection of David continues a strong representation by Laois in the Leinster teams throughout the past few years. Louis Hofmeyer was on the U17 team last year and two years ago Clint Auret represented the club also on the U17 team. Tom Cosby, President of Laois CCC commented last night ‘Its very satisfying to have David selected as many people in the club have put a lot of work and time into bringing on our youth players, especially Adrian Tudor who has given David the opportunity to prove himself on the men’s league teams’.

Laois Cricket Club are having a good season with the 1st XI topping Leinster League Division 4 and the 3rd XI on top of Division 11. The 2nd XI who were promoted last year to Division 5 have consolidated their position and now lie mid table. The club is also still involved in the YMCA Cup, the Leinster Junior Cup, the Dick O’Neill and Wallace Cups and hope to progress further in all these competitions.

Thanks to group member Noel who taught us a few trick shots throughout the year.

The group enjoyed the social aspects throughout the year also by having parties at Christmas, Easter and the Summer break. The entertainment was provided by the group themselves who choose the music , sang, danced and told jokes at these events. The Club would like to wish Jack the best of luck in Treloars College in England. The Club has stopped for the summer months and will resume in September.
