All roads lead to Laois St Patrick's Day parade that 'punches above its weight'

On parade in Abbeyleix from a few years ago.

Abbeyleix, invites one and all, to attend this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade which returns after a Covid-19 enforced four-year absence.

While traditionally a relatively small parade, the organisers say offers a lot.

“It certainly punches above it’s weight in terms of colour, variety and enthusiasm of both entrants and spectators alike,” said Cormac Bowell.

He says dedicated local volunteers, that entertainment will be had by all.

“We have a good representation from many of our local clubs, societies and businesses, plus a few from outside the Town as well.

“And of course, St. Patrick himself will be there himself, bearing a remarkable resemblance to local man, John Oxley.

“Considering that we haven’t had a Parade here since 2019, the response has been wonderful from the Community. Everyone we have spoken to, are delighted that we are back up and running again. In terms of entrants, we have two and four-legged as well as two and four-wheeled entries alike - All we need now is some decent weather on the day,” he said.

The celebration gets underway at noon in the Square.

"There is still time to register a float in the parade or to volunteer as a steward - but the Clock is ticking Folk," says Mr Bowell.

There are prizes on the day, for the best vehicular float; best pedestrian float; best spectator costume; best business premises display and best residential display.

"Do come along and share the festive atmosphere," concludes the chairman.
