PICTURES: Great buzz in Laois for World Bee Day

A special event to celebrate World Bee Day was held in Laois during this year's National Biodiversity week. Laois PPN in collaboration with Dunamaise Beekeepers Association, welcomed Community Group Members to the home of the Dunamaise Beekeeper’s Apiary, on Cosby Estate in Stradbally. The Apiary is nestled in the tranquil woodland, surrounded by flora and fauna making it an ideal home for the Bees. The Dunamaise Beekeepers shared their knowledge and insights into the lives of bees, their habitats, and how everyone can help protect these vital pollinators. Emphasising the vital role of bees in our ecosystem and the importance of pollinator-friendly practices to assist the essential work of bees in maintaining biodiversity and supporting our food systems.

Practical tips were provided to attendees on how they can support bees in their own gardens and communities in Laois, a practice of “No-Mow-May”, leave a wild space in a garden or field, sow pollen rich plants and flowers. Leave the ivy to grow as this is one of the last foods bees have during late autumn and early winter. This too provides the flavour to a honey, bees feeding from ivy, produce a distinctive taste honey.

Dunamaise Beekeepers Association kindly provided all attendees with a jar of their tasty honey.

The ‘World Bee Day 2025’ celebration not only raises awareness of our pollinators, but it alsoreinforces the need for sustainable practices that protect biodiversity for future generations.
