Touching tribute from Gardaí on anniversary of Laois trainee's sad passing

Garda College remembers dedicated student garda thirty years on
Gardaí have paid a touching tribute to honour a Laois student garda, thirty years after his sad passing.
On June 4 1996, student garda Martin Whelan from Ballyedmond, Rathdowney sadly passed away at the Garda College in Templemore.

Martin was just 21 years of age when he passed away suddenly, leaving the wider Laois and garda community in shock and grief.
After last week’s morning parade with garda intake groups 254 and 262, Superintendent Kieran Ruane led a solemn tribute to the late student garda.

“His memory lives on at the College, where a plaque remains dedicated in his honour. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam,” a garda spokesperson said.
Garda trainees bowed their heads in respect and held a moment of silence for Martin.
