Ireland Weather: Freezing temperatures on the way as Met Eireann forecast big change in the weather

Met Éireann forecasting a big change in the weather this week as the country is set to be hit with snap of winter-like weather but temperatures will shoot up again within days.

Temperatures will vary between -2 degrees and +18 degrees in Ireland over the next seven days with the week starting on the cold side. Frost is forecast on Monday night.

It's expected to remain unsettled through the working week with limited amounts of sunshine and occasional outbreaks of rain or drizzle.

Monday: Mostly cloudy and damp to start with showery rain across much of the east, midlands, and south. Some thundery downpours are possible. By midday, showers will become isolated with long bright spells developing through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light to moderate northerly breezes.

Turning frosty in many areas with temperatures falling to between -2 and +2 degrees. The vast majority of the country will stay dry and clear with just a slight chance of a passing shower. Winds will be very light northerly or variable.

Tuesday: Mostly dry and bright to start. Cloud will gradually build through the day with some outbreaks of rain pushing in to the southwest later in the evening. Highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light northeasterly breezes, veering easterly by midday.

Cloudy with patchy outbreaks of rain or drizzle extending northeastwards across the country. Minimum temperatures will generally range from 2 to 6 degrees, coolest in the northeast, in very light easterly breezes.

WEDNESDAY: Remaining cloudy with patchy outbreaks of rain or drizzle, becoming more persistent as the day goes on. Maximum temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees, warmest in Munster, in light southeasterly breezes.

Outbreaks of rain will continue, heaviest over the northern half of the country. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees in light southeasterly breezes.

THURSDAY: Staying cloudy through the morning and afternoon with outbreaks of rain continuing to affect the northern half of the country in particular. Some brighter spells may develop towards the south later. Temperatures will start to turn a bit higher, getting up to between 13 and 17 degrees, in light east to southeast breezes.

A few outbreaks of showery rain will linger, although much of the country is likely to stay dry. Minimum temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees in very light easterly or variable breezes.

FRIDAY: Largely cloudy with patchy outbreaks of rain, becoming more persistent in the north later. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees in very light southeasterly breezes, gradually veering southwesterly.

SATURDAY: Cloudy for much of the morning and afternoon with a few patches of light rain or drizzle. Some brighter spells may develop later. Highest temperatures of 16 to 18 degrees in very light southerly breezes.

FURTHER OUTLOOK: Considerable uncertainty remains for the further outlook. Early indications are that conditions will turn more settled for Sunday and the early days of next week with high pressure developing.
