Met Éireann warns of travel disruption as snow warning issued for Laois

A status yellow warning has been issued by the forecaster for a 24 hour period over the weekend

Snow on the way into Portlaoise during a previous wintry spell.

Met Éireann is warning of hazardous conditions on the roads and travel disruption as a weather warning for snow has been issued for Laois. 


A status yellow warning has been issued by the forecaster for a 24 hour period over the weekend. 


Falls of sleet and snow with snowfall accumulations are expected from 5pm on Saturday, January 4 to 5pm on Sunday, January 5. Motorists are being warned of poor visibility on the roads. 


Meanwhile a status orange snow-Ice warning will be in place over that 24 hour period for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary. Leinster, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Connacht will be under a status yellow warning for snow and ice. 


"Staying cold tonight and mainly dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees, locally colder where patches of fog and freezing fog develop. There'll also be frost and some ice forming once again," said a Met Éireann spokesperson. 


"Tomorrow the frost and fog will clear through the morning and it'll be dry for a time in many areas with some sunny spells. Rain will gradually spread from the southwest through the afternoon, becoming heavy at times, especially later and as it meets the cold air further inland, it'll turn to sleet and snow. A cold day with highest temperatures of just 1 to 6 degrees, with the higher temperatures along the south and southeast coasts, where the precipitation will fall mainly as rain. Winds will be mostly light easterly to begin, but will freshen through the day."
