Portlaoise hospital cancels outpatient appointments following heavy snowfall 

It comes as Laois' orange weather warning for snow and ice was extended

Portlaoise hospital has cancelled outpatient appointments for Monday, January 6 following 24 hours of heavy snowfall across Laois. 

Laois' status orange weather warning for snow and ice was extended until 10pm on Sunday night by Met Eireann. 

In a HSE statement, the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise management said:

"As an impact of the adverse weather conditions in Portlaoise and its surrounds, the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise are cancelling Outpatient Appointments for tomorrow, Monday, 6th January. Patients will be contacted directly and rescheduled as a priority.  

"Urgent and emergency care continues at the Hospital.  Any patient who needs emergency hospital care will be seen and the Hospital would urge such patients not to delay attending the ED or seeking medical attention if you suspect you are having a heart attack or stroke, please dial 999 or 112 in an emergency.

"The Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks the public for their support and understanding," said the statement issued by the HSE on Sunday, January 5. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

The Laois hospital is part of the Dublin Midlands Hospital Group which includes hospitals in neighbouring Kildare and Offaly where Laois patients would also be referred for care.

A HSE spokesperson said there were no cancellations in the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore or Naas General Hospital.

The statement added that the general advice if for patients to attend your appointments on locations other than Portlaoise hospital unless contacted by the specific service directly.

If you can't attend, the HSE asked that you contact the service where you are due to attend in advance.

The HSE adds that hospitals remain busy. A statement advised the public to know all health care options including how and where to access an Injury Unit www.hse.ie/injuryunits
