Laois County Council has advised anybody who is experiencing homelessness in the county during the icy spell to ring for help.
"Any individual/family experiencing homelessness during this cold weather spell can contact the Out of Hours Service on 087 445 4542.
"This service is operated by Midlands Simon on behalf of the four midlands local authorities, Laois, Offaly, Longford and Westmeath," the council state.
The service operates from 6pm – 12 midnight. However, messages can be left at anytime and a call back will be received.
The council says that contact will then be made with Laois County Council personnel and, if necessary and appropriate, emergency accommodation will be provided.
PATH (Portlaoise Action to Homelessness) is also taking calls on 087 774 4043.
PATH personnel meet at the grounds of St Peter and Pauls Church , Portlaoise every Saturday at 5pm and every Wednesday at 7pm to provide both food and other supplies for the local service users.
Portlaoise Garda Station can be reached for help on 057 8674100.
The advice was issued on Monday, January 6 2025, following a meeting of the Laois County Council Severe Weather Assessment Team.
County Laois is under a Low Temperature/Ice Yellow Weather Warning, until midnight on Thursday, with temperatures dropping to -7 degrees at night on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night.
