Well-known RTÉ weather forecaster Gerry Murphy has said that Laois locals expecting a heatwave may be in for a disappointment.

Speaking with the Leinster Express / Laois Live, Mr Murphy has said that Laois locals should expect cloudy conditions and rain for next week.

"There is an area of high pressure over Ireland at the minute that will keep weather dry and settled through to the weekend," Mr Murphy explained.

"Laois can expect a mix of cloud and sunshine today, with sunnier spells on Thursday and over the weekend. The weekend will overall be sunny, with an increase in clouds again on Sunday evening.

"Temperatures will increase throughout the week, climbing from 23°C today to 28°C on Friday through to Sunday. The temperatures will stay around 26°C to 28°C, but will not climb higher than that," the forecaster said.

"In the hot weather, Laois people should stray hydrated and be sun smart. Stay in the shade when necessary, and cover up when needed. We would also advise people to take care around bodies of water," he said.

"From Sunday onwards, the weather will change. People should expect rain and drizzle, with uncertain weather. Monday onwards will be cooler, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 21°C. It will be cloudier through to next week, with showers," Mr Murphy finished.
