DSCM is a new charity set up to cater for adults and children with Down syndrome in the Laois, Kildare and Offaly region. Their goal is to provide support and services to all with Down Syndrome in the region.
Research carried out on people with Down Syndrome suggests that those who attend essential services (Speech, OT etc) and get early educational support are better able to contribute to and integrate into society in general.
“We want our children and adults to reach their full potential and be accepted as contributing members of society not viewed by their limitations but respected for all they can achieve,” said the group.
“ Our dream as parents is that our kids would one day vote, possibly have a partner and hold a job if able and lead as ‘normal’ a life as possible. To help achieve this dream for our children and adults The Down Syndrome Centre Midlands intends to initially offer the following:
Skip (an early intervention programme)
Home Tuition/Summer School Support Programme
“Although affiliated to our Dublin counterpart DSCM is an independent charity we do not have to report to or give any of our funds to a head office, all monies raised in the midlands will be spent in the midlands in addition our only criteria to avail of our services is Down Syndrome.
“Our ultimate goal is to one day have our own centre, until then we will rent rooms in various locations for our services to best serve the needs of those wishing to avail of them.”
