Former Knockbeg pupil Shortlisted for Hennessy Portrait Prize

The Waiting Room by Tom McClean

A past pupil of Knockbeg College, Tom McLean, was shortlisted for the prestigious Hennessy Portrait Prize.

Tom, aged just 22, is a recent graduate from the centre of the Creative Arts & Media at GMIT. His oil on canvas portrait, Waiting Room, depicts his studio partner, fellow artist and friend.


The Hennessy Portrait Prize is open to artists across all disciplines and aims to encourage interest in contemporary portraiture and raise the profile of the National Portrait Collection.

The winning entry was by Gerry Davis. His painting will be included in the National Portrait Collection.

Nick Miller who has done a lot of portrait work in Laois won the inaugural award in 2014.
