Following on from the wonderful success of this event last year, all are invited to join the leaders of the Churches in the town at O’Connell Square on Good Friday April 18 at 3pm. We will walk around the town, remembering the events of the first Good Friday and praying for the town.

Laois Sinn Féin hold their Easter Commemoration in Mountmellick on Easter Monday April 21 to honour Patrick Phelan a Mountmellick native who was shot by Free State Forces on August 2 1922 in Clonaslee. Patrick, an IRA volunteer, lived in Pound Street and was the 3rd youngest in a family of 9 children. Please assemble in O’Connell Square at 11.45am. The parade starts at noon and proceeds to Patrick Phelan’s grave in St Joseph’s cemetery. Jonathan O’Brien Sinn Féin TD Cork will attend as guest speaker. All welcome.

The family of young Mountmellick brothers Ben and Jake Connolly welcome anyone who would like to run the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon on their behalf. The boys have a very rare syndrome that causes severe mental and physical disabilities. (See page 10 for full story)

Condolences to the family of Mary (Mai) O’Toole (née Mahon), Davin Park whose death occurred on Saturday April 5 at St Vincent’s Hospital Mountmellick. Mai was predeceased by her husband Pat. Reposed at her son Padraig’s home Derrycloney until removal to St Joseph’s Church on Monday evening. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon on Tuesday with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. Mai is deeply regretted by her son Padraig, daughter Mary (Curley), family, relatives and friends. Rest in peace.
