AGM of Mountrath and District Anglers Association held on April 3 in Eddie Phelan’s. Election of committee/officers:

Chairperson Peter Kileen; secretary Rita Watkins; treasurer Fran Kelly; assistant treasurer Rita Watkins; committee Damian Gorman, Ken Holmes, Colm Doheny, Michael Osbourne, Paddy Dunphy, Joe Hooban, Joe Hooban Jnr and Martin French. Ken Holmes, Peter Kileen, Damian Gorman elected as private water keepers to patrol the river banks and inspect fishing permits (all to be appointed by the courts and issued FP cards).

Ken Holmes suggested a clean up day along the White Horse River, on Easter Monday at 10am, meeting at the car park on Main Street.

Also discussed were new signs to be installed along rivers and bridges.

Club open day during the school holidays to encourage young poeple to fish date tbc. Restock of the river to be done in due course.

Peter Kileen thanke those who attended and wished all a good fishing season (March 1 - September 30). Fishing permits from Mr Fran Kelly, Fishing Tackle Shop, Mountrath. Single/OAP €10; adult €15; family €25.


The Tower Classic and Vintage Club, Ballyfin won second prize for the second year running in the Rosenallis St Patrick’s Day Parade. They also won third overall for the best float in the Portlaoise Parade this year.

Congratulations to all concerned.


The next meeting of the book club will take place on Thursday May 1, 6.15pm - 7.15pm. We will be discussing ‘White Tiger’ by Aravind Adiga copies are available from the library and new members are always welcome.

A Good Yarn Knitting Club meets in the library every Friday morning 10.30am - 12.30pm. Why not join us for a cuppa, good company gauranteed.

Easter Holiday storytelling session with Simone from Storygate. Wednesday April 23 2.30pm - 3.30pm. Suitable for children of all ages. This event is free but booking is essential, phone Aoife on 057 8756378 or drop into the library.


A cake sale will be held in St Fintan’s Hall on Saturday 19 after mass. All proceeds in aid of Mountrath Scouts Troop at 7pm. Your support would be greatly appreciated.


The sale of jam continues in Costcutters Mountrath and Phelan’s Shop Castletown. We would like to thank everyone for their support for this worthy cause by buying jam and donating fruit.


The outdoor gym in the local amenity park can be used by all ages. We would encourage all local clubs and groups to use this facility.
