A DVD of Borris-In-Ossory Parish will be launched on Thursday 19 June at a function in Racket Hall Hotel, Roscrea starting at 9pm. This DVD which has been compiled and recorded over the last two years by Noel Sheridan and Terence Smeaton contains footage of all sections, happenings and clubs of the local community. Included on the DVD are recordings of traditional music groups, individual singers, community development/employment association, school choirs, Borris-In-Ossory & Rushall Coursing Club, Social Services committee, ICA guilds, Borris-In-Ossory GAA Senior Championship winning teams 1956 & 1972, Borris-In-Ossory/Kilcotton U21 Championship winning team 2013, dancing groups, shops /business premises, Borris-In-Ossory Youth Club and many more groups and individuals. This is a fantastic record of all happenings in Borris-In-Ossory and will be a collector’s item in years to come. Proceeds from the launch night and the sale of DVDs will go towards Borris-In-Ossory parish funds, St Vincent De Paul Society and Borris-In-Ossory Youth Club. An auction will be held during the launch with a hurling jersey donated by Christy O’Brien and a portrait donated by local artist Billy Dollard among the items to be sold. A raffle for other valuable prizes will also be held on the night.

A collection will take place on Thursday and Friday June 19 and 20 in Dunnes Stores and Supervalu Rathdowney, on behalf of the Mater Foundation Heart and Lung Appeal, in appreciation from Sally and Joe Whelan, Donaghmore.


Borris-in-Ossory St Vincent De Paul will hold its senior citizens outing on Saturday June 28. The bus will leave Borris-in-Ossory after 10am mass. Anyone interested in going please contact one of the following before June 21, Michael Dollard, Teresa Lalor or Peader King.


The bus is now full for the Borris-in-Ossory Social Services annual outing which will take place on Tuesday July 1. The venue this year is Dublin Zoo, with a stop for morning tea/coffee en route and returning to the Gandon Inn for evening meal.


The dates for the remaining cemetery masses in the parish are as follows: Wednesday June 18, Killasmeestia Cemetery at 7.30pm and Wednesday June 25, Skeirke Cemetery at 7.30pm.


The cemetery mass and blessing of graves in Kyle Cemetery will take place on Thursday evening July 3 at 7.30pm.

A social will take place in Killasmeestia Community Centre on this Friday night June 20 with music by Liam O’Sullivan. Dancing will be from 9.30pm to 12.30am and supper will be served.


The death took place on Monday June 9 at Shalom Nursing Home, Kilcock, Co. Kildare of Sr Anna Hyland, Presentation Sisters, Oakley Park, Tullow Road, Carlow and formerly from Shanboe, Borris in Ossory, Co Laois.

Her remains reposed at 56 Oakley Park, Carlow and thereafter at R. Healy & Son Funeral Home, Pollerton Castle followed by removal to the Cathedral of the Assumption. Following funeral mass on Thursday burial took place afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow

The late Sr Anne will be sadly missed by her sisters Noreen Whelan, Borris in Ossory and Geraldine Kelleher, Cork, brothers-in-law, the Presentation community, school community past and present of Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.

She was daughter of the late William and Tess Hyland, Shanboe, Borris in Ossory. Sr Anna taught in Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal, Carlow since 1963 and became principal there, a role she held until her retirement in 1997. After her retirement she remained on in the school as home liason officer. One of her great loves was always music and in 1968 Sr Anna, then known as Sr Savio, took charge of all music at the school and founded the Presentation School Band which went on to achieve national and international acclaim, winning numerous awards and travelling to places such as London, Birmingham and New York.

The Carlow Person of the Year for 1997 was presented to her for her work with the band and for the love and appreciation of music which she passed on to several generations of young people in Carlow.

May she rest in peace.
